Is Trump calling Hillary urinating "disgusting" an effective campaign tactic?

Hillary Clinton, was late returning from a bathroom break during the Democratic debate, and here's what Donald Trump had to say about it:

Donald Trump launched an aggressive attack on Hillary Clinton on Monday night, saying she was "disgusting" for using the restroom during the latest Democratic debate and that she was "schlonged" by a male political opponent.

Standing before a crowd of 7,500, Trump recounted how the Democratic debate on Saturday night had resumed following a commercial break with only two of the three Democratic candidates. Clinton then walked on stage. Trump asked the crowd four times where Clinton had gone.

"I know where she went -- it's disgusting, I don't want to talk about it," Trump said as the crowd laughed. "It's too disgusting. Don't say it, it's disgusting."

Later in the night, Trump told the crowd that he could not picture Clinton as president because she never wins at anything. He then brought up the 2008 Democratic primary, which Clinton lost to Barack Obama.

"She was favored to win, and she got schlonged," Trump said, turning a vulgar noun for a large penis into a verb.

I don't get this. I don't see how this helps Trump's cause. There are plenty of people, including me, who despise Hillary Clinton for many reasons: fundraising for her foundation while secretary of state, keeping government emails on a private server, ignoring the security of Libyan embassy officials who later died, speaking out for rape victims except her husband's alleged ones, and so on and so on. But I don't see how making fun of an old woman slowly urinating on a toilet increases support for Donald Trump. I don't see how such personal, crude attacks help him at all. It's too extreme.

What if a Democrat had made fun of Sarah Palin going to the bathroom, saying "I know where she went--it's disgusting, I don't want to talk about it". What if a Democrat said that Sarah Palin got "schlonged" by Joe Biden? Wouldn't conservatives be rightly enraged?

I worry that if Trump is the nominee that such crude, sexual attacks will turn off undecided voters. I worry that if he lacks the self-awareness and judgement to avoid saying such things, he will say other things that will damage the country if he is president. We need a strong, aggressive president who will defend our interests, but not one who will say bizarre, off the wall things, and Trump embodies both characteristics. If Trump supporters can't realize that these kinds of comments hurt Trump, they may be in for a big surprise on election day.

Which early primary states best predict victory?

The other day when I wrote that Donald Trump was in big trouble in Iowa (because he is), many commenters said that it didn't matter because Iowa did not reliably predict the winner. So I decided to look into this. I looked at the history of contested Republican contests in 2012, 2008, 2000, and 1996, looking at the early states of Iowa (Feb 1), New Hampshire (Feb 9), South Carolina (Feb 20), and Nevada (Feb 23).

The two key ingredients to winning a primary are voter enthusiasm, and a getting out the vote operation. In a caucus, however, the organization is even more important. You have to identify people in advance who will agree to go to caucuses, which is much, much more involved and time consuming than simply voting. It can be a process that goes on for some time and only committed caucus goers will go in for that. That's why to be serious you need an organization in every district and committed people you know by name who are going to show up.
