Super Conservative National Review calls Marco Rubio extremely conservative

The super duper conservative National Review calls Marco Rubio extremely conservative in two nearly identical articles today... or maybe its NR that's extremely conservative and Marco Rubio who is super conservative, you decide. One article by Jim Geraghty calls Rubio "plenty" conservative, and the other by Deroy Murdock calls him "solid"... involuntarily bringing to mind the unfortunate image of a bowel movement.

Geraghty recites all the perfect and near perfect ratings that Rubio has received from the American Conservative Union, the NRA, the Family Research Council, and Citizens against Government Waste. Why, Rubio's proposed cutting government spending and even voted against the Import-Export Bank.

I'm sure that Rubio has a near perfect record from many of these groups. Probably so do many Senators who vote conservative on phony bills that will never have any hope of passage. But on the real, must-pass budget bills, which funds all the things Obama does, Rubio refuses to speak out against his own leadership's duplicity. He refuses to even try to filibuster to shed light on what the Senate is doing. Instead he dutifully votes no but never tries to use the enormous power of a Senator to slow things down. Remember recently when he said he was going to "slow down" the omnibus budget bill that Mitch McConnell had worked on in secret with Obama? Well Rubio never even bothered to show up to vote, much less slow it down.

Meanwhile Murdock says that Rubio was a "tea party pinup" in 2010, as if he were some sort of gigolo, and again cites his near perfect ratings from many conservative groups. Then he talked about some of Rubio's great accomplishments, like a bill limiting Hezbollah's access to global financial markets. But Rubio has voted to give Obama unprecedented authority to negotiate a terrible deal with Iran, which will result in over a hundred billion dollars being released to Hezbollah's patron.

Murdock says that Rubio also "torpedoed" Obama's bailout of some health care insurers, whatever that means. All I know is that in his five years in the Senate Rubio has never once tried to filibuster the funding of Obamacare.

Another great achievement: Rubio also pushed a bill that increased sanctions on Venezuela. Great! Rubio is always a leader on the most important issues of the day!

The only thing Rubio has pushed for with any passion is amnesty for illegal aliens. Here's how Murdock excuses it:

Rubio has raised suspicions for initially co-sponsoring comprehensive immigration reform, nicknamed “amnesty.” However, Rubio abandoned the bill once it metastasized into a 1,198-page monstrosity [not true--ed]. “We must begin by acknowledging that, considering our recent experience with massive pieces of legislation, achieving comprehensive reform of anything in a single bill is simply not realistic,” Rubio wrote in his book American Dreams. Instead, Rubio now calls for a “sequential and piecemeal” approach “with a series of bills that build upon one another until ultimately we have put in place the kind of immigration system our nation needs.”

Does Murdock know that "plenty conservative" Rubio at the last debate said he still supports amnesty for illegal aliens? Does Murdock know that Rubio still supports immediate amnesty for so-called "Dreamers", illegal alien children? Murdock doesn't mention either of these things.

Like many other Republicans, Marco Rubio has compiled a great conservative record on paper. But when actions mattered, he stayed silent. He claims to be Mr. National Security but says little about securing the border, building a wall, ending birthright citizenship, showing any national security qualms about legalizing millions of illegal aliens, or even calling for a halt for bringing in Middle Eastern refugees.

And this is who Murdock, a Fox News contributor, calls a "conservative leader".

Meanwhile Geraghty says

If Rubio is no longer conservative, then conservatism is now primarily a matter of aesthetics.

If the National Review thinks Marco Rubio is a conservative, then the National Review is now primarily a publication of establishment polemics. And I'm not the only conservative who's noticed.

If Cruz wins Iowa, will Republicans stop pandering to special interests?

Every candidate who has won Iowa since 1980 has supported the hateful ethanol subsidies and/or mandate, which makes both fuel and food much more expensive for no good reason. But if Ted Cruz, who opposes the ethanol mandate, wins Iowa, which seems increasingly likely, does this mean that we will finally have a leader who has the strength to stop pandering to special interest groups?

Trump thinks he can win without get-out-the-vote operation

Donald Trump seems to think he has revolutionized political campaigns. Without spending much money, he is on top of the national polls but is behind in Iowa and losing ground according to some polls in New Hampshire. Trump is running a campaign without spending money on polling, paid advertisements, or get out the vote efforts. He probably views it as cost effective, but it may end up costing him the nomination.
