In a brokered convention, would the establishment get behind Trump or Cruz?

It is starting to look like no one will get a majority outright for the Republican nomination. Trump is leading but polls in the high 20's or low 30's in most states. That probably won't be enough to get a majority of the delegates needed to be nominated.

It also looks like, at this point, that Ted Cruz will get the second highest number of delegates. He is only slightly behind Trump in many southern and western states. The balance of power, then, will be with whatever delegates Bush, Rubio, and perhaps Kasich get. Because each of these mushy moderates will have few delegates, no one will make a deal with them to make them the nominee. But they, along with GOP superdelegates, may be able to play kingmaker and choose between Trump and Cruz.

So which do you think they would choose?

The irony is that, except for immigration, the GOP establishment would probably be quite happy with Donald Trump. He's moderate or liberal on just about everything else, talks up his ability to make deals, and has shown no interest in cutting the size of government. But his rhetoric is too inflammatory for the GOP establishment.

Ted Cruz, on the other hand, is clearly conservative but does not talk in inflammatory terms. However, his agenda of reducing the size of government is a direct threat to the GOP establishment. Cruz has talked about eliminating a half dozen departments and agencies of the government, and would not give a blank ticket on spending like Trump would.

That's why I think that if given an unsavory (for them) choice between Trump and Cruz, that the GOP establishment would back Trump, with one exception: Jeb Bush. Jeb Bush hates Trump so passionately I cannot imagine him instructing his delegates to vote for Trump. However, after the first ballot the delegates will be able to decide for themselves. Expect the establishment to back Trump over Cruz in a brokered convention.

In the latest debate Donald Trump made it clear, once again, that not only he is not conservative, but he has absolutely no idea what conservatism is. His answer was that "Conservatism means... to conserve... your wealth".
