Welfare rolls in North Carolina drop 55% after drug testing

North Carolina has started mandatory drug testing for a small percentage of its welfare rolls. Within that small percentage who were tested, about 22% tested positive for illegal drugs. But that's not the big story; nearly half refused to show up for drug testing, and as a result lost welfare. The real number is that about 55% either failed drug tests or failed to show up for drug testing and lost welfare.

But don't worry, NC is only requiring testing for a small percentage of its welfare clients, and, incredibly, even if they fail the test, is still keeping some of them on it.

State officials report that of the 89 applicants given the drug test, 21 of them tested positive. An additional 70 applicants who were told to take the test never showed up for their appointment and consequently never got benefits.

The law requiring drug testing of Work First recipients suspected of drug use was signed into law in 2013 despite Republican Governor Pat McCrory’s veto — his first such action.

What would we do without Republican governors like McCrory?

In his veto statement, McCrory said the legislature “overreached” with its drug testing requirement. McCrory also said the program is too costly.

True, if you totally don't count all the money saved by denying welfare to drug addicts and cutting the welfare roll in half.

Critics of the program say that at $55 per applicant, the drug testing is too costly.

Liberal critics are always concerned about cost, except when it comes to spending on any other program except combating waste and fraud.

They also say these results prove that few of the applicants are drug users, at least no more or less so than among the general public.

50% or more of NC is on drugs? News to me!

Imagine if we drug tested for social security. We'd solve our financial problems almost immediately!

In a brokered convention, would the establishment get behind Trump or Cruz?

It is starting to look like no one will get a majority outright for the Republican nomination. Trump is leading but polls in the high 20's or low 30's in most states. That probably won't be enough to get a majority of the delegates needed to be nominated.
