NYC worried ghetto schools attracting too many white kids

Diversity is ostensibly about having more people of more races. But in reality we know it means only one thing: fewer white people. That's why rather than invoking diversity, liberals are instead sounding the alarm that historically black public schools are attracting white kids:

How white is too white? For the past several years the principals have worried that their institutions — designed to be racial and economic melting pots, but now attracting more white and middle-class families — will “tip” over into majority white, middle-class schools.

How black is too black? Can you ever imagine the NYT asking that question?

In its early years, Arts and Letters, for example, was more than 90 percent black and Hispanic, reflecting the Brooklyn neighborhoods around it, including Bedford-Stuyvesant, Clinton Hill and Fort Greene. More than 80 percent of its students qualified for free or reduced lunch.

But the school gained a reputation for its humanities curriculum, its science lab and its focus on the arts. And newcomers changed the demographic mix of its surrounding blocks. In Bedford-Stuyvesant, Clinton Hill and Fort Greene, the white population rose 120 percent from 2000 to 2010 and the black population fell by 30 percent, according to the Center for Urban Research at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

“I love the fact that so many white affluent families would want to send their children to my school,” he said one recent morning, before rushing off to give another tour. “But I know the impact it has on the diversity of my school.”

See? Adding white kids to a black school does not increase diversity in the minds of a liberal. So they want to have minimum quotas in schools for children of felons, welfare moms, and illegal aliens.

For the first time the department is allowing a group of principals to set aside a percentage of seats for low-income families, English-language learners or students engaged with the child welfare system as a means of creating greater diversity within their schools.

And the liberal response?

The idea of keeping the school diverse “totally jibes with my politics,” said Mark Schwartz, the owner of a liquor store in Prospect-Lefferts Garden, Brooklyn, who also has a kindergartner at the school. “But what if it means we lose out on this opportunity?”

I generally hate race based quotas, but I make an exception for areas where white liberals live like New York City.

The real reason Kelly Ayotte is against an Obama Supreme Court pick

No one was more surprised than I when New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte came out and declared that she would not consider a Supreme Court nominee from Obama. Not only that, but she was one of the very first senators to do so, right after Mitch McConnell made his announcement. Ayotte is a squishy "moderate" senator who could have been expected to give Obama whatever he wanted after a token fight. So why did she suddenly develop a backbone, and act as one of the first to speak out in opposition?

The real reason why the Senate shouldn't take up a new Supreme Court appointment

The New York Times wasted no time in showing how quickly justices have been confirmed to the bench, pointing out that from the time of nomination to confirmation usually only a few months have passed. They do that to argue that the Senate should take up whatever nominee Obama puts before them to the Supreme Court.
