Astronaut, returning from year in space, reports nothing of consequence

Astronaut Scott Kelly, returning from a year in space, returned with valuable research that should help other people who want to spend a year in space. Otherwise, it was pretty useless.

NASA aims to compare changes, including genetic mutations, between Mr. Kelly and his twin brother, Mark, a retired NASA astronaut.

“By looking at Mark’s results collected over the course of the year, we can see what the normal variations might be,” Dr. Charles said. Where genetic changes were faster in Scott Kelly, “those will tell us what areas to investigate in the future.”

One experiment looked at “fluid shift” — the movement of water from the lower body toward the head when there is no gravity to hold things down. Increased pressure in the skull could cause the flattening of the eyeballsseen in some astronauts, pushing their vision toward farsightedness.

Fascinating. Truly. And this helps all of us on Earth how? Let us say, not at all.
We spend billions on a space program that gets us nothing. Guess what? 100% of the people on Earth don't live in zero gravity. Such studies are useless. We are not going to Mars any time soon.

If you asked a taxpayer if he wanted billions of his money spent on studying zero gravity, he'd say no. I think he'd prefer having the money to spend on his own family. It sounds glamorous that this guy spent a year in space, but it was a total waste of money on a very, very, very low priority project.

If you like scifi, as I do, go and watch scifi. But don't demand the taxpayer pay for boring, useless, and expensive real life science fiction. And don't spout garbage about how the space program invents things. If we spend $10 billion putting someone in space and invent poptarts, the private sector could have invented them for a fraction of the cost without putting someone in space.

Supreme court only finds laws unduly burdensome when they relate to abortion

When evaluating laws, courts rarely find them too burdensome on Americans. Take laws (or regulations) mandating coal power plants be shut down. Or laws requiring every one to have health insurance. Or laws requiring businesses to provide health insurance, or comply with ridiculous EPA regulations regarding ponds in backyards or protecting snails on lawns. None of these are considered too burdensome on Americans. Unless they relate to abortion.

Afghans we helped express their love for the Taliban

The Washington Post had an article which made excuses for Afghans saying that they would support the Taliban. But when you get right down to it, we spent billions of dollars and many soldiers' lives trying to save that "country", and after all our effort, they still want to be ruled by a backwards religious theocracy.
