Lib media: Desperate women seeking abortions on Google

In an effort to whip up hysteria about abortion, the NYT claims that women in states which regulate abortion are more likely to search how to do do-it-yourself abortions on Google.

In 2015, in the United States, there were about 119,000 searches for the exact phrase “how to have a miscarriage.” There were also searches for other variants — “how to self-abort” — and for particular methods. Over all, there were more than 700,000 Google searches looking into self-induced abortions in 2015.

The state with the highest rate of Google searches for self-induced abortions is Mississippi, which now has one abortion clinic. Eight of the 10 states with the highest search rates for self-induced abortions are considered by the Guttmacher Institute to be hostile or very hostile to abortion.

The implication from this is that women who have "restricted" access to abortion are looking up how to self-abort on Google. I wonder if people use google to find out how to buy guns illegally in states that are "hostile or very hostile" to gun ownership. Do you think the Times would do a sympathetic article on that subject, with the suggestion we loosen gun laws so people don't buy guns illegally?

Of course, we cannot know from Google searches how many women successfully give themselves abortions, but evidence suggests that a significant number may.

We can't know if this means anything, but evidence suggests a significant number may? Or perhaps, may not. Here's my favorite "datapoint" in the "article":

One recent survey in Texas also reported a surprisingly high number of attempted self-induced abortions. It found that 4.1 percent of Texas women were sure or suspected that their best friend had tried a self-induced abortion.

Not that 4.1% of Texas women had an abortion. But that their best friend did. Or may have. Or may not have. It's a survey of those who are trying to guess if other people have had abortions. How much more scientific can you get than that?

According to another survey, which was published in Sociological Science, 34 percent of Americans who have been involved in an abortion — either they had one or they were the potential father — disclosed this to no one else.

Well, then, if it's secret, then it must be happening a lot! Or not.

Among those who did tell others, they told an average of 1.2 people.

1.2? What's the .2? Does that include telling midgets or aborted fetuses?

Missing from all of this discussion are two issues:

1) The "restrictions" on abortions have common sense reasons. Doctors need admitting privileges to local hospitals in case an emergency arises during an abortion. Children should require parental consent. There have to be certain medical safety standards. There is no debate about this at all in the article, with "restrictions" being treated as "hostile".

2) This article about Google searches on do it yourself abortion tries to be alarming, but masquarades as hard data when it isn't.

Supreme court only finds laws unduly burdensome when they relate to abortion

When evaluating laws, courts rarely find them too burdensome on Americans. Take laws (or regulations) mandating coal power plants be shut down. Or laws requiring every one to have health insurance. Or laws requiring businesses to provide health insurance, or comply with ridiculous EPA regulations regarding ponds in backyards or protecting snails on lawns. None of these are considered too burdensome on Americans. Unless they relate to abortion.
