GOP Establishment has kamikaze plan to stop Trump

The New York Times breathlessly reported a story with the title: "Republican Leaders Map a Strategy to Derail Donald Trump". The only problem? It makes no sense whatsoever.

The first prong of the plan is to put resources into the remaining primary states to stop Trump. But no mention is made of endorsing the only candidate who can beat Trump, Ted Cruz.

About two dozen conservative leaders met Thursday at a private club in Washington, where some pushed for the group to come out for Mr. Cruz to rebut the perception that the stop-Trump campaign was an establishment plot. “If we leave here supporting Cruz, then we’re anti-establishment,” said one participant, who could be heard by a reporter outside.

But the group failed to agree on an endorsement, instead pleading for Mr. Kasich and Mr. Cruz to avoid competing in states where one of them is favored. “They’re going to have to come to terms and lay off each other,” said Erick Erickson, an influential conservative commentator, who convened the meeting.

Great. By continuing to split the vote between Kasich and Cruz, Trump can slide through. This is their brilliant plan.

But wait, it gets worse. If Trump wins, they plan to field a third party candidate

But should that effort falter, leading conservatives are prepared to field an independent candidate in the general election, to defend Republican principles and offer traditional conservatives an alternative to Mr. Trump’s hard-edged populism.

This will guarantee that Trump and this third party candidate will split the vote and hand Hillary an easy victory.

The only way Trump can be beaten at this point is if Cruz gets enough delegates to deny Trump a majority and then, at the convention, for Rubio and Kasich to push their delegates to support Cruz. If the establishment isn't going to back Ted Cruz for the remaining primaries, they are wasting their time and playing into Trump's (small) hands.

Alaska spends like drunken sailors, then whines when times get tough

Alaska has no income tax (yet). It gets most of its money from oil revenue. So when the price of oil is high, Alaska can spend like there's no tomorrow. But when the price of oil and gas is low, like it is now, it becomes time for politicians to complain they don't have enough money to spend!
