Senate Republicans spending even more than Obama requests

Senate Republicans are proud of a water funding bill they passed that not only doesn't cut spending, but spends more than even President Obama has asked for.

The U.S. Senate’s first spending bill of 2016 allocates $261 million more than President Barack Obama requested and lacks significant conservative amendments, but it still sailed to passage Thursday in the Republican-led chamber.

An overwhelming number of senators on both sides of the aisle approved the energy and water development appropriations bill, by a vote of 90-8.

Moving legislation and avoiding fights has been a top election year priority for Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Avoiding fights with whom? Obama and the Democrats. "Avoiding fights" is another way of saying "surrender", which is always McConnell's top priority.

the Senate started advancing spending bills at levels established in the 2015 Bipartisan Budget Act, which increased government discretionary spending by $30 billion above the 2011 caps.

Still, Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., told The Daily Signal he is glad the appropriations process finally got off the ground.

I'm not.

“This is the first time this appropriation bill has passed the Senate since 2009,” Lankford, who sits on the Appropriations Committee, explained. “To avoid last-minute continuing resolutions, backroom deals, and omnibus bills, we must move bills through a regular-order appropriations process.”

Well, they spent more money than they should haven, but on the brighter side, they did it through regular order!

The article goes on to say how the Republican leadership used parliamentary maneuvers to kill conservative amendments, requiring 60 votes for them to pass instead of 51.

It's business as usual for Republicans in Washington DC.

Now that the primary is effectively over and Donald Trump no longer has to win Republican support, he is running away from the few conservative positions he took. One of them was his famous promise to end Muslim immigration, at least for a time. Now Trump says that that plan was merely a "suggestion".
