Mark Levin shows us why Ron Johnson is behind in Wisconsin

Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson is behind in his race for reelection against Russ Feingold, who is trying to make a comeback. Wonder why?

The roots of the explanation go back to an explosive interview Senator Johnson had with talk show host Mark Levin in 2013.

Conservative radio host Mark Levin and Republican Sen. Ron Johnson butted heads Wednesday evening during an intense battle over the Ted Cruz-led effort to defund Obamacare.

The radio host fired back that Johnson and his cohorts have no strategy to defund Obamacare, as promised in his 2010 re-election campaign. “Did you not campaign, sir? Did you not say that Obamacare is the greatest assault of our lifetime?” Levin questioned. “And what have you done?”

Johnson, on the other hand, insisted it was “not helpful” for Levin and others to go around labeling politicians and writers “not conservative enough” because they don’t follow the same strategy as Cruz’s. “I wasn’t expecting to come on here with an inquisition,” he lamented at one point.

Things got especially tense when Levin went off on Johnson for not uniting behind Ted Cruz’s 21-hour “filibuster” speech last month.

“Let me tell you something, Senator, because I have to go,” Levin concluded the segment. “Senator, if 46 of you people, you Republican senators had stood up shoulder-to-shoulder during the filibuster and made it quite... clear to Harry Reid and the whole world that you were shoulder-to-shoulder, Republican-to-Republican, then the outcome might have been slightly different, wouldn’t it?”

After Johnson hung up, Levin wondered: “I don’t think he’ll be back, Mr. Producer. I thought I was being polite.”

And here's the irony. Johnson didn't return to the Mark Levin show until last week, several days before reelection. He's about 6 points behind Feingold. He has an "F" rating from Conservativereview.com.

Don't get me wrong. Even an "F" rated Republican like Johnson would be better in the Senate than Russ Feingold. But Johnson's problems stem from his failure to live up to his promises. He promised to go to Washington to fight Obamacare, and Obama's other excesses; he didn't. If Johnson had spent the past six years defeating, or at least publically fighting Obama's power grabs, he would be in a far better position for reelection. But Johnson doesn't excite his base, who sees no compelling reason to turn out for him.

I was struck by Johnson's most recent appearance on Mark Levin's show. Levin was impeccably polite, and Johnson went on and on about how Russ Feingold fully supported Obama's agenda. Left unsaid was what Johnson had substantively done to oppose it.

That's why Ron Johnson is behind. And going on conservative talk radio right before reelection is not going to make up for six years of lack of action.
