If Trump is impeached, it will be his own doing

What if FBI Director Jim Comey was investigating someone close to Obama in the White House; and what if Obama asked Comey to stop the investigation; and what if Comey continued, and then Obama fired Comey?

Trump supporters would be calling that obstruction of justice and would be calling for Obama to be impeached, while liberals would defend Obama. But when Trump does the very same thing, all the wagons circle around Trump, while liberals call for impeachment. Two different cult of personalities operate exactly alike, but oriented on different people.

The fact is, Trump probably could not be convicted of obstruction of justice, but his alleged actions certainly are giving the appearance of it.

To begin with, what if Comey's alleged memo is true, stating that the President asked Comey in February to stop the investigation into his then-National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn. This may or may not be connected to the broader investigation into the Russian interference in the election. In any event, it is improper for a President to ask the FBI Director to stop an investigation into members of the White House. It's a clear conflict of interest. The FBI, which, while technically under the authority of the executive branch, is supposed to operate with the utmost impartiality.

It's no wonder then that Comey, uncomfortable with Trump's alleged request, apparently wrote a memo describing the events that occurred because of the impropriety of what Trump was requesting. It's very common for lawyers, asked to do something unethical or illegal, write a memo describing the experience so if issue arises again later, they have documented what actually happened at the time it happened.

If this fact pattern is true, Trump's firing of Comey gives the appearance of obstruction of justice. Trump asked Comey to stop investigating, Comey continued, then Trump fired him. Now, in Trump's defense, the firing took place two months later, and it is not clear if Trump asked Comey to stop the entire Russian investigation, or just the part concerning Flynn.

But Trump's feeble explanation that he fired Comey because now, in May 2017, because he just now decided that Comey handled the Hillary Clinton investigation last year poorly, is obviously a bad lie. Trump didn't learn anything new about Comey's handling of the investigation. If he had wanted him gone because of it, he would have fired him in January.

But firing Comey after allegedly asking Comey to stop investigating the White House looks bad. It looks like obstruction of justice, which is an impeachable offense.

If Trump is impeached, it will be because of his poor judgment in (a) asking Comey to stop his investigation and then (b) subsequently firing Comey. I don't think, however, that Trump could be convicted in the Senate because there is no proof he fired Comey because of the Russia investigation.

But in politics appearances are everything and Trump has just handed his opponents a length of rope and a hangman's noose. The Democrats have been salivating since before inauguration to find a way to impeach Trump and Trump may have just handed them a way to do that.

Trump got to this point because he has two weaknesses:

1) He's sleazy. He lies about campaign promises. He employs relatives in shameless nepotism. He refused to separate his finances from his day job, as his relatives who work in the White House have also failed to.

2) He's not very smart. Anyone with a modicum of sense would not ask the FBI director to stop an investigation into the White House. Anyone with a microscopic particle of common sense would not then fire the FBI director shortly thereafter.

If Trump goes down, it will be because of his own corruption and low political IQ. Sad!

How much does it cost to sink an aircraft carrier? I ask because I have just read that the US is launching a new aircraft carrier, the Gerald R. Many on Medicaid refuse to pay $1 for healthcare
