New budget prioritizes energy resources over two subkinds of birds

The new budget actually prioritizes energy resources over birds!

Before lawmakers could agree to a $1.1 trillion, last-minute deal to avoid shutting down the U.S. government, they first had to deal with a couple of birds.

The result is a 1,603-page spending bill that includes a paragraph barring the Obama administration from approving endangered-species protections for two types of sage grouse, an imperiled, pheasant-like bird that is ruffling the petroleum industry’s feathers across the West by cohabiting on prime oil and gas land. Now environmentalists are squawking. The grouse provision is “grossly irresponsible,” Defenders of Wildlife CEO Jamie Rappaport Clark said

--I don't know much about this provision, but I like it already!
Just this week, drillers’ fears about potential sage-grouse protections caused bidders to stay away from a federal sale of oil and gas leases in Nevada, The Associated Press reported. Interior’s Bureau of Land Management sold just one parcel out of 97 offered.

“As we’ve seen just this week with the low-yielding BLM lease sale in Nevada, independent producers are concerned that a future federal listing of the sage-grouse would harm existing state-based conservation measures already in place to protect the bird, while simultaneously ignoring the great strides America’s energy industry has taken to reduce surface impacts and enhance conservation of the sage-grouse in the West,” Dan Naatz of the Independent Petroleum Association of America said in a statement.

But conservationists like Audubon’s Rutledge accused lawmakers of “ignoring scientific input” about the plight of the birds, which have seen their range dwindle as development expands across the region. Only about 5,000 breeding Gunnison sage-grouses still exist, Interior’s Fish and Wildlife Service says, while the greater sage-grouse has a population between 200,000 to 500,000.

--In other words, we would still have HALF A MILLION OTHER BIRDS that are ALSO GROUSES if this bill were to pass. Do you see how out of wack the Endangered Species Act has gotten? We're not just prioritizing species over economic development, we're prioritizing sub-sub-sub-species. What will we do if one type of Grouse goes extinct, when there are only 500 other kinds left? Oh, the pain!

3 American Teens Caught Trying to Join Islamic State

Mohammed Hamzah Khan, 19, rose before dawn on Oct. 4 to pray with his father and 16-year-old brother at their neighborhood mosque in a Chicago suburb.

When they returned home just before 6 a.m., the father went back to bed and the Khan teens secretly launched a plan they had been hatching for months: to abandon their family and country and travel to Syria to join the Islamic State.

While his parents slept, Khan gathered three newly issued U.S. passports and $2,600 worth of airline tickets to Turkey that he had gotten for himself, his brother and their 17-year-old sister. The three teens slipped out of the house, called a taxi and rode to O’Hare International Airport.

The Khan teens, U.S.-born children of Indian immigrants, each left letters for their parents explaining their motives.

“An Islamic State has been established and it is thus obligatory upon every able-bodied male and female to migrate there,” Khan wrote. “Muslims have been crushed under foot for too long. . . . This nation is openly against Islam and Muslims. . . . I do not want my progeny to be raised in a filthy environment like this.”

His sister wrote: “Death is inevitable, and all of the times we enjoyed will not matter as we lay on our death beds. Death is an appointment, and we cannot delay or postpone, and what we did to prepare for our death is what will matter.”

The GOP’s draft 2015 “omnibus” spending bill reportedly includes $948 million to help poor and unskilled Central American migrants establish themselves in the United States, but includes no effective restrictions on President Barack Obama’s plan to provide work permits and tax payments to millions of resident illegal immigrants.

That new spending works out to $16,928 for each of the 56,000 youths, young adults and children who crossed the border during the 12 months up to October 2014. (Daily Caller)

Harvard Law students too traumatized to take exams

Minority student coalitions at Harvard and Georgetown law schools are pressing administrators to postpone or defer final exams because they claim they have experienced trauma over the recent grand jury decisions in the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.

The students are hoping for the same outcome granted to students at Columbia Law, another top-tier institution.

Over the weekend Columbia Law’s interim dean, Robert Scott, announced that exams would be postponed for students who feel traumatized over the two grand jury decisions not to indict white police officers in the deaths of Brown and Garner, both of whom are black.
