Cuba recognition gives property holders the opportunity to get their land back--NOT!

I love it when the NYT has an article with a certain headline and then the body of the article contradicts the headline!

The title:

Cuba Seizures Now Present Opportunities

The body talks about people who had their property seized by the communists can try to get their land back, but...

Cuba’s gross domestic product is about $68 billion, making cash payouts highly unlikely. But companies interested in foreign investment in Cuba are probably imagining how their settlements could be exchanged for other investment deals,

...in other words, no money back, but if you invest money AGAIN in Cuba, this time the Cuban government won't take it away again! Promise!

Roberta S. Jacobson, the assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs, said registered claims against the Cuban government have always been included in discussions about restoration of diplomatic relations. “We do not believe those things would be resolved before diplomatic relations would be restored, but we do believe that they would be part of the conversation,” she said last week. “So this is a process, and it will get started right away, but there’s no real timeline of knowing when each part of it will be completed,

--I know the timeline for completion. It's never.

The United States trade embargo against Cuba prohibits full economic trade with the island until those claims are settled. Experts say restoring diplomatic relations is likely to open the door for claims to be resolved sooner, although the Cuban government has expressed no interest in doing so and the embargo remains in place.

Look at all those opportunities, just like the headline said!

WashCompost upset Obama not releasing more drug dealers from jail

President Obama granted 12 pardons and 8 commutations on Wednesday. The pardons, given mostly to people who had served out their sentences long ago, were for a variety of mostly minor offenses ranging from "working a distillery on which the required sign is not placed" to "manufacture of marijuana" to wire fraud.

LA Times puzzled why San Diego has gang trouble

San Diego, for reasons unclear, has the most gang involvement in the underground commercial sex industry. Twenty-two suspected gang members and associates are suspected of running a multi-state prostitution ring.

With drugs and weapons becoming riskier business ventures because of more aggressive law enforcement, gangs have moved into prostitution. The money is easy and the Internet and social media have replaced streetwalking and red-light zones as an effective method of attracting johns, officials said.

"It's absolutely an epidemic, not just in San Diego but across the country," said Robert Howe, assistant special agent in the San Diego office of the FBI.

The San Diego region, for reasons that are unclear, appears to be a dubious leader in this new trend.

Vox reports fewer criminals in jail, but remarkably uncurious about one small detail

There are fewer Americans in prison, jail, probation, or parole than any time since 2003, Vox reports.

The number of Americans in prison, jail, parole, or probation dropped to less than 6.9 million in 2013, down 41,500 compared to 2012 and hitting the lowest point since 2003, according to a report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

Until 2008, the corrections population had been steadily growing for decades as all levels of government enforced tough-on-crime policies — particularly against drug offenses — that tied up more people in the criminal justice system. But states and the federal government, facing budget constraints brought on in part by the cost of maintaining large prison populations, began pushing reforms that reduced penalties for nonviolent offenders and diverted more people to punishments besides incarceration.

On Friday, the National Labor Relations Board issued complaints containing 78 charges against McDonald's. Among those are charges that McDonald's illegally threatened, fired, and cut the hours of employees who protested its wages.

That's not just significant because it concerns a huge corporation involved in a high-profile fight over wages; it's a big deal because the NLRB's general counsel recognized McDonald's as a "joint employer" of its fry cooks and cashiers, meaning the company is considered the employer alongside the smaller franchises where those people work.
