Libtards at Vox: Tear down urban highways!

The libtards at VOX have a solution for dealing with urban traffic problems: tear down highways!

Back in the 1950s, the nation's transportation planners had a bad idea. They tore down buildings along urban waterfronts — which in many cities were right downtown — to make room for freeways that would help mostly-suburban drivers get around more quickly.

--How evil! They should be punished!

Now, a half-century later, many of these freeways are falling apart. Transportation planners have to decide whether to rebuild them. But in many cities, replacing them with ordinary surface streets is a better bet.

--Can I bet zero? That's the amount I'd like to bet.

Right now, Seattle is trying to replace one of its elevated freeways with a tunnel, and it's not going well.

Politicians in Seattle and Washington State are spending billions of dollars on this project because they believe the city's streets will be clogged with traffic if they simply scrapped the freeway. But that's not necessarily true. When a city tears down an urban freeway, some cars will be diverted to other roads. But many other drivers will respond to the lower capacity in other ways.

Some will shift to taking transit to work. Others will shift their commutes earlier or later in the day to avoid periods of peak congestion. Still others will move closer to downtown, or take jobs that are closer to where they work

--Some will lose their jobs. Some will be forced to move. But all will be happier not being able to drive from one place to another.

So taking out an urban freeway won't generate as much traffic on other roads as naive projections might suggest.

--As long as you kill the jobs that connect the suburbs to the city, that's very true!

Removing freeways has worked in the past. San Francisco's Embarcadero neighborhood blossomed after an elevated freeway there was torn down in the wake of the 1989 earthquake. Portland removed a waterfront freeway in the 1970s. Milwaukee did the same a decade ago.

--And they all have awful, dreadful traffic during rush hours, as this "article" tries so hard to obscure. How difficult is it to understand that 30,000 cars trying to get somewhere are going to create more traffic jams on streets than highways? But you won't get that from reading the libtards at VOX.

Tylenol wants lesbians to swallow

Tylenol is running an online ad showing a non-traditional family at the holidays. The family is non traditional because it features two lesbians, one of the lesbian's ex husbands, the ex-husbands apparent gay partner, and very happy children. They all seem very happy--the dad whose wife divorced him to become a lesbian, the dad's new gay partner, even the kids, who don't appear even slightly confused by all this.

Christians disappearing from Iraq, can you guess why?

Just a year ago, an Advent service at St. George’s Chaldean Catholic Church would have drawn 300 to 400 worshipers, says the Rev. Miyassir al-Mokhlasee. But now only around 75 people are scattered across its pews.

Ringed by concrete blast walls and police checkpoints, the church has seen its congregation shrink for the past decade. The nation’s Christian population has plummeted from more than a million to what community leaders estimate is less than 400,000 today.

Conquests by extremists from the Islamic State, known for their cutthroat brutality and intolerance for other religions, have delivered another blow to Christians in their historic heartland.

For the first time in well more than a millennium, the plains of Nineveh and its provincial capital of Mosul have been virtually emptied of Christians. Islamic State fighters, who control the northern region, had ordered Christian residents to convert, pay a tax for keeping their faith or face execution.

Libtards at Vox: What voter ID problem?

Loyola University law professor Justin Levitt tried to quantify the epidemic of voter ID fraud that's forcing so many states to pass restrictive voter ID laws. He looked for not only cases where someone was convicted, but tracked "any specific, credible allegation that someone may have pretended to be someone else at the polls, in any way that an ID law could fix."

Out of roughly a billion votes cast, he found 31 credible cases of voter ID fraud. And that is, he thinks, an overestimate.

LA Times puzzled why San Diego has gang trouble

San Diego, for reasons unclear, has the most gang involvement in the underground commercial sex industry. Twenty-two suspected gang members and associates are suspected of running a multi-state prostitution ring.

With drugs and weapons becoming riskier business ventures because of more aggressive law enforcement, gangs have moved into prostitution. The money is easy and the Internet and social media have replaced streetwalking and red-light zones as an effective method of attracting johns, officials said.

"It's absolutely an epidemic, not just in San Diego but across the country," said Robert Howe, assistant special agent in the San Diego office of the FBI.

The San Diego region, for reasons that are unclear, appears to be a dubious leader in this new trend.
