Kansas Judge orders Kansas to spend more on schools

A state court panel in Kansas ruled on Tuesday that public schools were being unconstitutionally underfunded, though it stopped short of ordering a specific increase in education dollars.

The court also ruled that a provision allowing localities to provide funding to equalize the gap between rich and poor districts was insufficient because it did not guarantee that the playing field would be leveled.

--There is the real problem. Some districts pay more to provide a better education, and some pay less! We can't have some districts choosing to pay more to provide a better education than others! That money must be redistributed, by an unelected judge.

In previous years, the state’s courts have consistently ruled that Kansas lawmakers were not spending enough on K-12 education to meet the constitutional requirement of making “suitable provision for finance of the educational interests of the state.” That vague constitutional clause has been the foundation of raging political argument in the state.

Conservative lawmakers have balked at what they have seen as the judiciary intruding on the role of the Legislature. They have said that schools did not necessarily need more money, they just needed to spend it more wisely.

Which are more important, farmers, or a fish?

California’s almond orchards have been thriving over the past decade and now provide an $11 billion annual boost to the state economy. Covering 860,000 acres, they account for 80 percent of world production.

Farmers in the area where almond production has been most consistent have relied on water from a federally controlled project that draws its supply largely from the Sacramento River. But that source is less reliable because of legal requirements

Brooklyn, which is a dump, is now too expensive for people to live in

For many years people who wanted to live in New York wanted to live in Manhattan, or at least parts of Manhattan. People who couldn't afford it lived in Brooklyn, which is kind of a dump--old, broken down buildings, a long commute to Manhattan, and crime, lots of crime. But now demand for housing in Manhattan has pushed so many people to dumpy Brooklyn that people are even getting priced out of dumpy Brooklyn!

By many measures, Jeff Huston and his wife, Lisa Medvedik-Huston, arrived late to Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Iranian revolution guards pose for pictures with US-armed Lebanese Soldiers

An elite wing of the Iranian military claimed that its troops have been along Lebanon’s border with Israel.

A Twitter account associated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps tweeted the statement on Thursday along with several pictures of Iranian soldiers posing with uniformed Lebanese counterparts. A report by MEMRI, a US-based Middle Eastern media watchdog, tracked the photos to a December 17 blog post affiliated with the Iranian Army, and noted that the pictures were taken in the Beqaa and Baalbek regions of southern Lebanon.

The soldiers in the pictures could be seem wearing military fatigues that included patches of the flags of Iran and Hezbollah, a terrorist group that has been a bitter rival of Israel, most notably in the Second Lebanon War of 2006.
