Scott Walker gives lip service to gay sex struggle

I would be the last person on the planet Earth to accuse Scott Walker of being insincere in any of his stated positions. I was impressed how after the gay marriage ruling came down, he called for the Constitution to be amended to give states the power to decide the issue.

However, since then, his lips have been curiously pursed:

In a statement that lapped many of his more cautious rivals, he called for a constitutional amendment allowing states to decide the issue for themselves.

But barely a day later, in front of an audience of 4,000 conservatives in Denver on Saturday night — a Western Conservative Summit that had been ripping the court and lamenting same-sex marriage for two full days — Walker didn’t mention either.

After running through his stump speech without mentioning the Supreme Court’s recent controversial rulings, Walker had another chance with radio host Hugh Hewitt, who asked the likely presidential candidate if he’s “all-in” when it comes to defending religious liberty.

“Yes,” Walker replied, before launching into a brief boilerplate answer about the importance of freedom of religion.

Walker’s decision to eschew the issue tailor-made for his audience seemed particularly forced when Hewitt teed it up for him.

Asked how he’d ensure his judicial appointments were originalist conservatives, Walker gave a lengthy explanation about his “three litmus tests” for nominating judges in Wisconsin — none of which included conservatism — and on the question of how he’d fight for religious liberty, Walker answered without referencing the court’s same-sex marriage ruling but with platitudes.

You see, here's the problem. If Presidents want to be elected with a mandate, they actually have to campaign on it. If Scott Walker gets elected President and says he wants to do something about gay marriage, but barely mentions it in the campaign, he's going to have a hard time getting legistators to go along with him. If, however, he gets elected by a wide margin by campaigning strongly on overturning gay marriage, then legislators will feel more pressured by popular will to go along. And there are things Congress can do, such as limiting the jurisdiction of the courts to decide gay marriage.

If Scott Walker is afraid to talk about this issue while still in the Republican primary, how reticent will he be to mention it in the general election?
