New York wants to bring public urination out of the shadows

The speaker of the New York City Council is pushing a bill to, among other things, decriminalize urinating in public:

[A] urinating vagrant turned a busy stretch of Broadway into his own private bathroom yesterday – an offense that would result in a mere summons if Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and her pals get their way. Wrapped in rags and a Mets blanket the hobo wandered into traffic at around 10:30 a.m. and relieved himself as cabs, cars and buses whizzed by between West 83rd and 84th streets on the Upper West Side.

Mark-Viverito in April announced plans to decriminalize public urination along with five other low-level offenses: biking on the sidewalk, public consumption of alcohol, being in a park after dark, failure to obey a park sign and jumping subway turnstiles.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton — who in the early ’90s implemented a “broken windows” approach to policing to dramatically cut crime — is against the new plan, saying such offenses lead to more serious crimes.

An employee at the Victoria’s Secret, where the homeless man often lounges, said he drives away business. “He curses people out, threatens lives,” said the employee, who works in the lingerie chain’s loss-prevention department.

In liberal ideology, the homeless are among the most virtuous of the favored classes, and can do no wrong. How else to explain a policy which will literally turn the streets of New York into a sewer? And as many of you know, public urinating is often known as the "gateway excretion". Once public urinating is decriminalized, can public defecating and public masturbating be far behind? I'm sure families with children will love it, it can create a lot of teachable moments about human biology.

But of course, that's not all. Imagine if parks are open after dark, think of all the drug dealing and armed robberies that wil occur. Imagine if people are allowed to walk around drinking in public, how that will affect violence on the streets. And now, apparently, people can choose to not pay for subway rides if they are athletic enough to jump the turnstiles!

It's taking New York on the road to Escape from New York. And as I know that most people in New York are liberals, I couldn't think of a better place to try this kind of social experiment.

What other kinds of experiments do you think NYC would be a good place to try?

  1. a) Releasing predatory animals--lions, tigers, cheetahs, on to the streets of New York to see if they can adapt to liberal society, and send roving teams of social workers on the streets to attend to their needs.
  2. b) Opening the cell doors at Riker's Island, the city jail, for a day as an experiment to see what will happen. Who will leave? Who will stay? Will the falsely accused go out and commit crimes?
  3. c) Let diplomatic staff at the UN know that under no circumstances will they be prosecuted for any crimes, no matter how serious.
  4. d) Introduce thousands of illegal aliens onto the streets of New York and see if it affects the crime rate, or, if that's already been done, deport thousands of illegal aliens from the streets of New York and see if that affects the crime rate.
  5. e) Require all New York City police on patrol to be accompanied by a representative of the ACLU on their rounds and see if that has an effect o

Which Democrat does Atticus Finch remind you of?

I was never a big fan of To Kill a Mockingbird. As a kid I thought it was boring and tedious, partially because it had no space ships or lasers or any narration from a robot's point of view. While the ostensible subject of the story--the discrimination that blacks suffered in the South before desegregation--was quite real, the way it was taught in my school was something else. The lesson we were made to learn was about our current justice system: "When minorities are accused of crimes, they are not guilty. They are invariably gentle, well-intentioned innocent bystanders framed by the evil white justice system." Also as I read the book I thought Scout was a boy's name and Jem was a girl's name and so by misinterpretation had my first experience with transgenderism in literature.

Nutty small town leftists fight against stores with lower prices

I never understand people in small towns who want to ban chain stores because they like the "local character" of their mom and pop stores. Sure, I think it can be great fun to walk in a downtown area filled with mom and pop stores that look quaint, but when I actually go shopping, I am not looking for quaint, I am looking for lower prices and larger selection, and that is what chain stores have in abundance.

Has Ellen Pao Castrated the Feminist Movement?

Ellen Pao has dealt a decided blow to the feminist movement, in an unintentionally self-inflicted way. Pao, a former senior employee of the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins, sued claiming gender discrimination after she (like most other employees) were passed over for partnership. She lost her lawsuit, in part because the trial revealed she had actually benefitted from favoritism and, despite her busy work schedule she still found the time to have an adulterous relationship with another married partner.
