What could possibly go wrong in a business when programmers and janitors make the same salary?

We are told that Marxism can really work (why, just look at Bernie Sanders!) but when we point to its many (bloody) failures in the past, we are invariably told "It just wasn't done right, so let's keep trying!" This article is an example of another such attempt.

Three months ago, Mr. Price, 31, announced he was setting a new minimum salary of $70,000 at his Seattle credit card processing firm,Gravity Payments, and slashing his own million-dollar pay package to do it. He was called a “thought leader.” Harvard business professors flew out to conduct a case study.

Did HBS professors really rush out to see this? I think since Dr. Lifson left there's been some decline.

“Income inequality has been racing in the wrong direction,” he said. “I want to fight for the idea that if someone is intelligent, hard-working and does a good job, then they are entitled to live a middle-class lifestyle.”

That's the first thing he got wrong. Employees aren't paid because they are "entitled" to a certain salary level; they are paid a certain salary level because they provide at least that level of value to the company. So how has the experiment been working out so far?

...a few customers, dismayed by what they viewed as a political statement, withdrew their business. Others, anticipating a fee increase — despite repeated assurances to the contrary — also left.

Perhaps they thought that with every employee, including receptionists and janitors, making $70,000, that fee increases would be in the offing. But how did Price's employee take the move?

Two of Mr. Price’s most valued employees quit, spurred in part by their view that it was unfair to double the pay of some new hires while the longest-serving staff members got small or no raises

“He gave raises to people who have the least skills and are the least equipped to do the job, and the ones who were taking on the most didn’t get much of a bump,” [a financial manager] said [who later quit].

The new pay scale also helped push Grant Moran, 29, Gravity’s web developer, to leave. “Now the people who were just clocking in and out were making the same as me,” he complained. “It shackles high performers to less motivated team members.”

So everyone is being paid the same amount, but some are dissatisfied because they see that those who work harder, or those who have greater ability, are not given greater rewards.

Mark Levin says that conservatism and free market capitalism are not a theoretical ideology, but are factual observations of human experience. And he's right. It's not in human nature to accept the same pay when others around you don't work as hard or are not as capable. It's not human nature for a highly skilled programmer to be satisifed when he sees the receptionist making as much as he does.

The ony thing that's surprising is that someone like Mr.

Hillary finally gives voters a reason to support her: her deceased mother

Hillary is about to launch an ad blitz! Unfortunately, she's accomplished very little as a Senator so can't talk about that. There is a lot to talk about during her stint as Secretary of State--but all of it is bad. So she needs to give voters a reason to vote for her, and at last, she's found one: her deceased mother!

Too often the decline in the civil society hurts good, hard working people. There's nothing that can be done about that, for the moment. But every so often we hear stories of the decline in civil society hurting liberals. This story is one of them:

Do you think holding the GOP convention in Ohio will get one additional vote in Ohio?

In choosing their favorite sports team, people usually choose the team who takes showers in locker rooms physically closed to where they live. So if you live in Oakland, you like the Oakland Raiders, because they shower closer to you than other teams. If you're in New York, you like the Yankees, because their locker room toilets are closest to where you live as well. Even though most of these players do not come from the same location, people like it because the team is said to represent where they live.

Which is worse, Obama's plan to shut down coal plants, or McConnell's "plan" to fight it?

President Obama is about to release a plan to fight imaginary global warming by shutting down coal fired power plants. Coal fired power plants produce a lot of carbon dioxide, which is a key element in the imaginary theory that CO2 causes global warming. I say imaginary because (1) there hasn't been any global warming in 18 years, (2) man-made CO2 accounts for only about 3% of global CO2, which is mostly natural, and (3) CO2 is a tiny percentage of the upper atmosphere, and is not present in enough volume to be substantially trapping heat.

The Federal Judge putting Hillary under oath is asking the wrong questions

I read with great interest how federal judge Emmett Sullivan is requiring Hillary Clinton and two of her assistants to answer questions under "penalty of perjury", which means, simply enough, that if they are caught lying they can be sent to jail. However, the questions Judge Sullivan is putting to them, especially Hillary, are not the right ones and this perjury risk is not as great as it might seem.

What's wrong with this headline: "Black caucus brings diversity push to Silicon Valley"

Diversity is good except when it isn't. When you see a Politico headline which reads " Black caucus brings diversity push to Silicon Valley", it looks a little odd, because an exclusionary group that only permits people of one race, the Black Caucus, is pushing a different group, Silicon Valley, to have more diversity. In fact a few years ago Congressman Stephen Cohen, who has a lot of black constituents, requested permission to join the Black Caucus but was refused because he was white. Ditto for the United Negro College Fund and other groups that focus on people of one race, while hypocritically calling on other races to support them.

“My district is right next to Silicon Valley, and for years and years and years, my constituents have been part of those who have not had access to these opportunities, even the ones who have the qualifications, background and skills,” said Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), who’s helping to lead the black caucus’ tour next week.

Does anyone really believe that Silicon Valley is turning away thousands of qualified black engineers?
